Movies: Splice, the dark side of genetic engineering

Two Genetic Engineers on an unauthorized experiment, by introducing Human DNA into a new animal species. God-like it may seem. But, the two are about to discover, that their creation is turning into something that is not we thought of to be.

Humans as we are, and the boundaries of our knowledge and the thirst for deeper meaning of things could really bring us enlightenment and sometimes, worst, left us falling into the deeps of destruction and nothingness. The movie had already been released, and though I haven't seen it, the trailer depicts the plot of the story. You know a great experiment gone wild.

A discovery that made them superstars and a creation that turns into something that are not prepared for. It is a film that cautions us that we can go somewhere but that somewhere could be a disaster.

A Human Hybrid.

When we say Hybrid, it pertains to something composed out of many things. A collection of parts put into a single entity. In the movie, the two scientists are developing a new breed of animals by splicing DNA of different animals. Splicing is the method and Hybrid is the result (i.e., just a reminder not to get us confused or anything).

Certainly, these scientists are somewhat successful in the animal categories and want to introduce a Human DNA to an animal entity. In the process, the result was astounding and the progress is rapid. With the creature’s rapid evolution, it grows more that an animal like than Human like. Its desires and inclination are not as a Human Hybrid. But, instead into a creature which stepping itself into the food chain.

Purpose of Animal Hybrid Experiments.

There rarely known, or not at all, of such experiments. Such depictions most often time are seen on movies. But, the ideas are not that far from reality. What is its purpose, if such thing exists? The First reason will be, research for better medicine or alternative treatment. In these experiments, the test subjects are, mostly, animals. They are using animals, because Humans has tendency to be hesitant or difficult to invite in such research. Compare with animals, the resources are virtually anywhere and anytime you can have them and even reproduce them.

The closer the subject to human the more close the medicine or test to be effectively administered to Humans. Now, these are animals in the experiments. Although, they have some physical similarity, still they are far from human. So, for the scientist to be close to Human, they grow them; clone them or introducing Human DNA to a animal subject to produce a Hybrid. A subject that possesses a Human characteristic and no guilt when it failed for it is an animal after all.
